I reached Singapore at 11.00 AM. Before I landed, I remembered seeing the modern city of Singapore. I saw buildings I've never seen before in Indonesia. I see small ants moving through the spacious road swiftly, unlike the dirty and full-of- traffic-jam roads in Medan.
As expected, my grandparents were already there waiting for me, and readying themselves to fetch me to my guardian's house. Along the way, I already feel the essence of cleanliness in that place. I feel... clean and purified. I was rather amazed by the level of hygiene.
It took us almost an hour to reach Jurong Kecil. It was really a pain in my butt. I barely could sit anymore after 2-3 hours of constant sitting in plane and taxi. We reached there. In front of the semi- detached building is the view of Bukit Timah hill, where I see a tall tower on top of hill. "It is the highest hill in Singapore" I heard from the taxi driver, using his Singlish-hokkien accent, talking to my gramp "It's pity how Singapore has a hill as highest point."
She lives in 4th floor, the highest floor in that old-looking building. My grandparents was rather fatigue after 10 minutes of climbing the steep stairs.
We reached the door and rang the bell.
The door opened.
There she was, standing so brassly, huge woman with that bull-dog face and pimply cheek. Like what my sister described to me, she looked a little fierce, has huge front teeth (reminds me of rabbit), sagging cheeks, large mouth, chinese eyes, black, curly hair, cut-short. Seems that her feets are larger than her body.
"Hi! Welcome! I've been expecting you, Anderson."
I stared at her, wondering what's with that welcome words using that sickening face expression of fake smile. " Look, your brother and sister are here. You must have missed them."
You bet I do. I really missed my siblings since I was primary 1, when they moved to Singapore for further studies. It's because of the riotings that made me transfer to Singapore. WIthout that economic downterm in South east asia, I would have never even known any of you nice Singaporean people. I guess it's a blessing and a curse =)
I gave a hug to my brother and sister. I was rather... glad.. yet i feel that my heart is filled with emptiness.
"Guys, make sure you treat Anderson with great care allright?" She said to the rest of the people in that guest room.
"Yes, Cie." All replied.
The guest room is not really a guest room, it is more of... a study room. You will see many study tables, each assigned to different person. I was assigned the table near the wall near her. I am really visible to that guardian, and I can't do anything reckless much. There were 3 drawers on my right, and a small drawer just in front of me, under the table. the cinnamon-table looks old and used many times. Traces of pencil marks and scratches were there. I am facing an empty table. There's nobody sitting in front of me.
I was asked to call her 'Cie' or sister, in hokkien dialect. She is a cantonese, and she speaks english, chinese, hokkien, and malay too. Everybody calls her that.
There were quite a number of people there.
There's my sister, who was sitting quite far away from me. She's near the corner of room, with a bookcase beside her. Across her was Shervi, an Inidonesian polite looking girl who wore thick glasses and is from St. Margaret Sec. Sch. She looks a little nerdy and brawny. I see a trophy in front of her, "Runner-up of badminton Girls B- division, St Margaret." She seems to be a good friend of my sister. My brother Jefferson was sitting diagionally of my direction. He was reading a comic. He's from Nanhua secondary school. Beside him is an empty table, which is front of my table. And so is the table in front of me, or my right side. There's Zerwin a Balestiarinian school student, he was sitting 2 tables away from me, behind the empty table in front of me. He looks huge, fat, and tanned. He's Indonesian. His side's left table was a pimply faced man, a little fat, a Thai named Thitisaksakul Krit. We called him David. He was from the same school as my brother. Behind him was Albert, looks 15-17 years old but stays in primary school for some reason. An Indonesian. He's in Swiss cottage primary school. Albert's right side, or David's back was empty.
There was a smart one, I kind of forget his name.. I think it was Alex or something (let's just assume he's Alex). I was not very close to him as he referred himself as the smartest person in this place. Rather a very proud and stuck up St. Josephian. An Indonesian. Another one was not very bright, and was considered as the worst student in this place, Raymond. My sister told me of him. He defied Cie's rules a lot, and ended up being punished thousand times. Until now, he still argues with the guardian and once he managed to sue her of being abusive to the social worker of Singapore. They never talk to each each other much. Raymond's from Hong kong.
I shared my bedroom with my brother, Albert, Raymond, David. Alex and Zerwin shared another room. My sister, Shervi and the guardian shared a room.
After an hour of tour around the house and chatting with my grandparents, they left. Now it's only my guardian and me and the others.
She cooked toufu that day. I tried talking to her.
"I love toufu." I said to her politely.
"Yeah? And?" She replied me in her sharp tone.
"Just don't cook and vegetables. I don't like them. Please."
"Oh yeah? I don't what you like or don't like. You only eat whatever food I cook. As long as you live under this roof, you have to obey me and my words or else ended up being punished severely. Now get lost. Don't disturb me."
